The firm

A leading UK law firm with a network of offices from the South Coast to Scotland, working together as one national team. An innovative practice and the first top 100 law firm to achieve “Gold Standard” Investors in People, our values and culture are not just words on our website but are the heartbeat of the firm. The lack of barriers between departments, a real lack of hierarchy, zero tolerance for arrogance and pomposity makes Shoosmiths a fantastic place to work.

The team

Shoosmiths' 6-partner national construction and engineering team advises on all aspects of projects, from strategic advice on procurement and institutional and market expectations at project inception, to contentious issues during and after the completion. We have a fast-growing team, mainly based in Birmingham, but with other lawyers in Manchester, Leeds and London.

The role

With an increase in work from existing and new clients including developers, contractors, sub-contractors, consultants, and funding institutions, growth is very much on the agenda for our Birmingham-based team.

We are eager to speak with construction lawyers looking to make their next move to a non-contentious construction role. Many of our construction partners and team members have previously worked in-house for major industry players, and so candidates with backgrounds in private practice or industry are equally of interest. We would also consider someone with contentious construction experience who woud prefer to specialise on the transactional side.

Skills and qualifications

Candidates should ideally have been involved in advising on a mix of development/infrastructure projects, real estate and corporate acquisition work for a range of clients such as developers, contractors, consultants and other entities. However, a lack of familiarity with any of these will not be a drawback provided that the candidate is enthusiastic and willing to learn.

You will need, or be prepared to build on, a good understanding of the standard forms of construction contracts and associated documentation .We act for a range of clients, primarily on the employer/developer side, but previous experience on the contractor/supply side would also be valuable.

Equal opportunities

Shoosmiths is a committed Equal Opportunities employer promoting equality of opportunity. This means that everyone who either applies to or works for the firm is treated equally, whatever their gender, age, ethnic origin, nationality, marital status, disability, sexual orientation or religious beliefs.
