Main responsibilities

Advancing the firm’s knowledge management capabilities

  • Supporting the Head of Knowledge Management in the development and implementation of the firm’s Knowledge Management strategy
  • Acting as an advocate for Knowledge Management across the firm
  • Delivery of the Shoosmiths house style in relation to documents and precedents – Smarter Documents
  • Building relationships with professional support lawyers and knowledge experts
  • Supporting the Knowledge Management team in firmwide projects

Availability of know-how resources across the firm

  • Delivery of house style firmwide across precedents and documents
  • Encouraging the production within the firm (over time) of a range of appropriate Knowledge Management resources such as precedents, drafting notes, practice notes, transaction manuals, negotiation guides and other materials to assist the legal advisers throughout the firm (and not merely those teams that have professional support lawyers)
  • Encouraging collaboration between professional support lawyers to develop resources that can be used in common across different parts of the firm
  • Encouraging standardisation of the manner in which know-how resources are described, stored and indexed to enable them to be located and used by legal advisers across the firm, including those outside the team in which those resources have been created
  • Working with those teams in the firm that do not have professional support lawyers to encourage production of Knowledge Management resources for those teams’ legal advisers
  • Working with the firm’s PSLs to co-ordinate the migration of the legal content of Channel 9 to the firm’s new intranet to ensure consistency across divisions and teams
  • Analysing the benefit to the firm of the legal resources supplied by external publishers including Practical Law and Lexis professional support lawyer in relation to specific projects eg precedents
  • Co-ordinating across the firm the introduction of new IT products that require professional support lawyer involvement such as automatic document production and e-signing platforms

Consistency of quality of legal knowledge and skills across the firm

  • Ensuring that legal advisers across the firm receive updates on new legal developments
  • Encouraging the use of knowledge sharing tools in a virtual world
  • Ensuring high standards are set for documents with regard to consistency and house style

Consistency of quality of written materials emanating from the firm

  • Working with the IS team on the further development of the firm’s house style, including further developments as required in both the contentious and non-contentious parts of the firm, and arranging for training throughout the firm
  • Working with the Business Development team to develop a means of ensuring a flow of legal articles on the firm’s website from all appropriate parts of the firm in a consistent and recognisable Shoosmiths style
