Senior Associate - Employment

PQE: 5 years +
Term: Permanent
Team: Employment
Location: London
The role

We are looking for talented, passionate employment lawyers from 5 yr PQE upwards to join our team in London. We pride ourselves on having the culture and the technology to support flexible working practices which are even more relevant following the events of this year and will be considered wherever possible.

Do come and talk to us if something is missing from your current role. As part of our small team you will be able to take responsibility and shape your own development and the course of the team. We have straightforward, transparent routes to promotion and we genuinely believe we have something different to offer you for your long term career.

Working in this team, you would enjoy a varied case load including an impressive track record in ET and EAT cases. Recent hires in this region have unlocked great opportunities for corporate support work as well as stand-alone employment work and we have continuing scope to develop our practice further.

We want to hear from you if you’d like to be part of a busy, thriving team with national and international reach. We are looking for an employment generalist with a good mix of contentious and advisory experience, ideally with experience of the financial services sector. Experience in corporate support and litigation is desirable. We will be impressed by ambitious lawyers who take the initiative, command strong relationships with their key clients, enjoy busines development and have a desire to work as part of a team to make their individual mark.

2020 has seen the dawning of a new lexicon for employment lawyers – we’ve been at the cutting edge of understanding measures and developments put in place to navigate the impact of a global pandemic. We have continued to put our clients at the centre of everything we do to advise them with innovative solutions and commitment and we are looking for like-minded individuals to join us in that effort.

We are a values-driven business – our values are at the core of the firm and we evaluate how we behave in accordance with these values through a competency framework. This role is considered to be at competency level 2 or 3 in our internal framework, depending on experience.

If you have questions for us before you apply – please feel free to contact Rachel Charlton in our recruitment team on Rachel.charlton@shoosmiths.co.uk or 03700 86 5809.

The team

We work differently here and pride ourselves on our commercial edge. We aim to act as an extension of our clients’ business and understand how they operate – partnering with them to drive improvement and add value in many different ways – not just by delivering legal advice.

The team primarily works with employer clients on a mix of contentious and non-contentious matters. We also have specialists in advocacy, corporate work and business immigration.

We operate as a single team across our London and Thames Valley offices (Tier 1 ranked) and work for a variety of blue chip clients and/or household names.

The firm

We are a top 50 law firm with over 200 partners and around 1,600 staff in total.  We have 13 locations in the UK and a significant international network.  Our clients include some of the largest financial, automotive, and technology businesses in the UK.

We champion diversity and inclusion, and do everything we can to attract and nurture a diverse group of people and to create an environment and culture that is genuinely inclusive, in which every member of staff feels valued for their contribution.  We have been awarded Gold status in the Law Society Diversity and Inclusion Charter in recognition of our commitment to this.  We were the first major law firm to achieve “Gold Standard” Investors in People.

Equal opportunities

Our approach to our people is underpinned by our approach to diversity, inclusion and well being. Our ambition is to build a diverse and ambitious workforce that reflects all backgrounds and talents, and a workplace that is supportive and inclusive, recognises and nurtures talent, and has a strong sense of community between colleagues.

This means that everyone who either applies to or works for the firm is treated equally, whatever their gender, age, ethnic origin, nationality, marital status, disability, sexual orientation or religious beliefs.
