The role

Our IS Department is seeking a Junior Software Developer to join their Applications Team. This is a fantastic opportunity for a either a recent graduate or school leaver who has gained 1-2 years software development experience to join an expert team responsible for developing and enhancing Shoosmiths’ Case Management System, Visualfiles, which is utilised by hundreds of legal advisors across the UK.

You'll be joining an experienced team of Software Developers and working closely with the users to ensure that their needs are being met as we continuously look to develop the firm's processes.

Please note, this will be an immediate start. 

Main responsibilities
  • Deliver professional, business focussed and highly performing IT solutions to an agreed scope.
  • Administer the Case Management system (Visualfiles, Lexis) in accordance with the needs of the business.
  • Analyse business requirements and create functional/technical specifications.
  • Provide a key point of liaison between relevant areas of the business and the IS Department to ensure rapid response to all problems, ideas, issues and queries raised.
  • Test all software developments, upgrades and bug-fixes as required or directed, ensuring products meet both functional and performance specifications.
  • Ensure functional and technical documentation is maintained and is accurate.
  • Where appropriate, administer and maintain the firm’s various systems in accordance with the needs of the business.
  • Resolve problems relating to applications and their use.
  • Work with other members of IS and the business to ensure that effective change control is operated.
  • Support other members of the Enterprise Applications team and of the IS Department as a whole.
  • Ensure that internal customers receive the highest levels of service.
Skills and qualifications

In order to be successful, you will have:

  • A passion for software development, with demonstrated project and/or commercial work experience, which may have been gained during an industrial placement.
  • Education/Qualifications - a Bachelor's degree, HND or Foundation Degree in Computer Science (or similar subject), OR a formal software development quailfication.
  • Technical experience with .C# and .NET. Ideally you will have an understanding of database principles and design, along with knowledge of report writing packages such as Crystal Reports or Microsoft Reporting Services.
  • Personal skills - Self-motivating with a flexible approach, including a preparedness to actively seek work.
  • A methodical and accurate worker, able to see tasks through to the end.
  • The ability to express ideas clearly in speech, email and documentation.
  • The confidence, maturity and stature to deal effectively with colleagues in all parts and levels of the business.

Additional details

Occasional travel to other Shoosmiths offices may be necessary. From time to time, the Graduate Software Developer will be required to work flexible or extended hours to complete some tasks outside of core business hours of 08:00 to 18:00.

Background checks

Due to the nature of the work undertaken, confirmation of employment will be subject to a variety of checks which will be carried out once an offer of employment is accepted.  These checks will include employment references covering the last 5 years, proof of ID, proof of address covering the last 5 years, Personnel Vetting credit search (which will only highlight insolvency or County Court Judgments - should any adverse data show on the Personnel Vetting search then any offer of employment made will be withdrawn).Terrorism Check (against data supplied by the Bank of England) and a DBS check previously known as a Criminal Records check.
