The department

Skadden represents and advises employers across the spectrum of labour and employment matters (Labor) and also employment contracts and benefits (Executive Compensation and Benefits).  Our London employment team is part of the international Labor group but also works closely with colleagues in the firm's Executive Compensation and Benefits practice.

The Role

The London employment team advises on contentious and non-contentious employment law including:

  • employment issues that arise in complex corporate transactions, such as post-merger integration, employee retention, executive contracts, commercial risk and consultation requirements;

  • cross-border employment issues including consultation and other employment obligations relating to restructurings and reorganisations, international policies and the co-ordination of cross border advice;

  • counseling on labor relations issues, including collective bargaining and industrial disputes, the introduction and implementation of workplace policies and contracts,  corporate governance, data privacy and business protection.  Additionally,  we advise senior management on their individual contracts; employment-related litigation, including contract disputes,  tribunal claims  and the enforcement of post termination obligation;

  • managing the employment aspects of regulatory investigations and any resulting action (working closely with our white collar crime team) and financial services regulatory issues as they affect employers.

Person Specification

We are looking for a mid-level associate.  Ideal candidates will be admitted to practice in England & Wales with 3-4 years' relevant post qualification experience, although those with less or more experience who can demonstrate relevant experience will be considered on their merits. The successful candidate will have experience of English employment law in a general practice, providing contentious and non-contentious employment advice in the context of transactions and as a stand-alone discipline.  Transactional experience is essential to the role. This is an excellent opportunity to join a small team working on high quality transactions, and would suit a self-starter:  the successful candidate will be confident and able to work independently but will have the support of the existing team .  Strong academics are also essential.

Remuneration

We pay generous rates and provide our lawyers with a highly competitive benefits package.  As of 2021, the package includes:

  • Discretionary year-end bonus
  • Technology allowance
  • 22 days holiday and 3 personal days
  • Enhanced Family leave
  • Private medical insurance
  • Permanent health insurance
  • Life assurance
  • Interest free season ticket loan
  • Gym allowance

Hybrid Working

Our new hybrid work model, which remains subject to review, consists of working at least three days per week in the office (for full-time attorneys) and living within commuting distance to the office.  From 2023 our office will be at 22 Bishopsgate in the City of London.

More information on the guidelines, including coordination of work schedules within the practice, can be discussed during the interview process and confirmed upon joining the firm.

Training and Development

Skadden has a sophisticated training programme that includes both in-house and external seminars and training sessions.  We also pride ourselves on providing our lawyers with "on-the-job" training and constructive "real-time" partner feedback.  The formal training programme includes:

  • Regular know-how meetings.
  • Weekly and monthly training seminars and workshops for all levels covering legal topics relevant to the firm’s practice areas and skills.  These are presented by partners and associates and external specialists, QC’s and other professionals.
  • group training sessions (such as an annual, inter-active seminar on financial covenants from an external presenter)
  • Live video-links to seminars presented across Skadden’s network of offices.

Pro bono

Skadden strongly encourages its lawyers to assist, through pro bono work, those individuals and groups unable to afford legal services. A number of pro-bono opportunities are also

available to our lawyers through our pro-bono programme.  We are affiliated to LawWorks, a registered charity which supplies pro-bono projects to the firm.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Diversity, equity and inclusion are fundamental to our success as a global law firm, giving us a wealth of different perspectives from which to address our clients’ most pressing issues across a wide spectrum of industries, geographies and cultures. We strive to develop initiatives at Skadden to specifically address diversity, equity and inclusion goals — including for recruiting, professional development, attorney retention and advancement, and cross-cultural awareness — while also continually inculcating inclusion principles into the fabric of the firm. This includes ensuring that all job applicants are treated fairly regardless of, for example, age, disability, sex, race and sexual orientation as per our Equal Employment Opportunity statement. If you require adjustments to be made during the selection process, please speak to a member of the recruitment team.
