Senior Associate/Associate – Competition, Regulatory and Commercial Opportunities

PQE: 4 years +
Term: Permanent
Working hours: Full time/Part time
Practice area: Commercial/ Competition/ Regulatory
Location: Guildford
The Role

We are looking for great lawyers to join our leading competition, regulatory and commercial practice.  This is a fantastic opportunity to work as a specialist within a highly professional and dynamic commercial team currently consisting of 14 lawyers, advising and assisting on a wide variety of high quality competition, regulatory and commercial matters.

We also recognise that lawyers value the ability to work flexibly - we have agile working policies to facilitate flexible working and whilst this is a full time role, we will consider a minimum of 4 days per week.

What will you be doing?

All members of the commercial team advise on commercial contracts although within the team there are lawyers with specialist competition and wider regulatory expertise.  The competition practice is top tier and work is high quality, varied and interesting.  There is some sector focus including life sciences, sport and technology and we advise businesses from across the global economy.

So, you can expect to get involved in a fantastic range of work, with an impressive client list that includes well-known brands, multinationals, FTSE 100 corporates as well as owner managed businesses and entrepreneurs.  The team (and the wider firm) has a significant focus on international work and much of what we do has a cross border dimension.

Representative recent matters include:

  • Advising a global technology business on merger control including EUMR filings

  • Advising a leading life sciences business on its compliance policies and risks arising from a competition law and anti-bribery perspective

  • Providing all required commercial and regulatory advice to a next generation Swedish telecommunications company, providing services across the UK

  • Advising business and individuals on ongoing competition law investigations of the CMA

  • Advising on the implementation of EU falsified medicines law in the UK, including technology outsourcing agreements and advice on Brexit related implications

  • Leading the firm’s response to Brexit

  • Advising on distribution and procurement contracts and tenders

Qualifications and Experience

We are looking for strong team players with good inter-personal skills, good academics and high quality experience – typically with a major City or leading national/regional practice – who have a commercial approach and excellent technical, communication and negotiation skills.

The range of the work undertaken means we can accommodate a variety of experiences and aspirations: you might be a specialist competition lawyer looking to continue this type of work, a commercial lawyer with relatively limited competition and regulatory expertise who wishes to develop those specialised or a specialist looking to broaden your practice to a wider variety of sectors or work types.  We appreciate that no-one is likely to have all the skills and experience required for this varied role, and will provide guidance, support and training as required.  The key is an enthusiasm for this varied and interesting role.
