Stevens & Bolton – making a positive difference to your career

Stevens & Bolton is a UK law firm with over 200 staff. Of those around 150 are lawyers, approximately a third of them partners, many of whom chose to join us from City law firms. Our office is based in Guildford and our staff work from here and also flexibly.

We’ve made excellence the hallmark of our firm: in the clear advice we give, in the enduring client relationships we build and in our proactive and highly responsive service.  We seek to recruit people who will help us maintain and build on this, and in return we offer excellent long-term career and development opportunities.

You’ll work with people who listen, and who actively and willingly support one another within a collaborative and engaging environment.  We genuinely care about our people and strive to build and maintain a diverse, inclusive and happy workforce.

Our vision is to be one of the UK’s most successful law firms, offering excellence beyond the city, a supportive culture and the best client experience. Always making a positive difference. We were proud to be named Law Firm of the Year: The Independents at The Lawyer Awards 2020.

The Role

Due to the expansion of the team and increased workloads there is an opportunity for an associate lawyer to join us.  We are seeking a lawyer with between 1-3 PQE, ideally with existing experience in general succession planning and estate administration work, but looking to develop this in our broad based team.

A position exists for a technically strong, personable and ambitious lawyer, looking to pursue a career in our private client team.  The successful candidate will join one of the top ranked personal tax and trust teams in the South East outside London.

The Personal Tax, Trusts & Charities team consists of seven partners and sixteen other lawyers/advisers and is highly rated in both Chambers and Partners and the Legal 500.  A number of partners and lawyers in the team are recommended as leaders in their field, and the team has recently won two national awards.  The team’s clients are spread throughout the UK and overseas and include clients in the Sunday Times Rich List.

The Personal Tax, Trusts & Charities team undertakes the full spectrum of private client work, key areas being:

  • Succession planning through Wills and trusts, including international/cross border estate planning
  • All aspects of inheritance tax, capital gains tax, and income tax planning as they apply to individuals and trusts
  • Probate and administration of estates and trusts, including domestic and international estates
  • Planning for non-UK domiciled clients and non-UK trusts
  • Tax planning for entrepreneurs and business owners
  • Establishing charities and providing advice to charities

There is plenty of opportunity for the right associate to build a career in this fast developing practice group.

Rachel Tavroges-Hunter, one of the most recent individuals to join the team as an associate, comments: “The quality, variety and breadth of work appealed to me when applying for a job with Stevens & Bolton, along with the very high calibre of both colleagues and clients.  I thoroughly enjoy every day here – the work has definitely lived up to my expectations; every day is different meaning that I am learning a huge amount and the days are never dull!  Equally importantly, my colleagues also make it a truly enjoyable place to work.”

Qualifications and Experience

We are looking for a strong team player with good inter-personal skills, strong academics and high quality experience – typically with a major City or leading national/regional practice.  Excellent communication skills are a must.  An appetite for business development would be a definite advantage.

Candidates should have a general track record in private client work. Prior exposure to the areas outlined above would be preferred, but this is not essential for the correct candidate.

We offer excellent supervision, coaching and training, but we expect all team members to take responsibility at an early stage and to want to be stretched and challenged.
