Stevens & Bolton – making a positive difference to your career

Stevens & Bolton is a UK law firm with over 200 staff. Of those around 150 are lawyers, approximately a third of them partners, many of whom chose to join us from City law firms. Our office is based in Guildford and our staff work from here and also flexibly.

We’ve made excellence the hallmark of our firm: in the clear advice we give, in the enduring client relationships we build and in our proactive and highly responsive service.  We seek to recruit people who will help us maintain and build on this, and in return we offer excellent long-term career and development opportunities.

You’ll work with people who listen, and who actively and willingly support one another within a collaborative and engaging environment.  We genuinely care about our people and strive to build and maintain a diverse, inclusive and happy workforce.

Our vision is to be one of the UK’s most successful law firms, offering excellence beyond the city, a supportive culture and the best client experience. Always making a positive difference. We were proud to be named Law Firm of the Year: The Independents at The Lawyer Awards 2020.

The Role

Due to the expansion of the team and increased workloads there is an opportunity for an associate lawyer to join us.  We are seeking a lawyer with 2+ PQE and appetite for a broad range of quality private client work, but with experience and interest in particular in tax advisory work.

A position exists for a technically strong, personable and ambitious lawyer, looking to pursue a career in our private client team.  The successful candidate will join one of the top ranked personal tax and trust teams in the South East outside London.

The Personal Tax, Trusts & Charities team consists of seven partners and sixteen other lawyers/advisers and is highly rated in both Chambers and Partners and the Legal 500.  A number of partners and lawyers in the team are recommended as leaders in their field, and the team has recently won two national awards. The team’s clients are spread throughout the UK and overseas and include clients in the Sunday Times Rich List.

While the Personal Tax, Trusts & Charities team undertakes the full spectrum of private client work and any candidate could expect to be involved in work across this range, the available role has particular emphasis on the tax advisory aspects of the practice, including:

  • Succession planning through Wills and trusts, including international/cross border estate planning
  • All aspects of inheritance tax, capital gains tax, and income tax planning as they apply to individuals and trusts
  • Planning for non-UK domiciled clients and non-UK trusts
  • Tax planning for entrepreneurs and business owners
  • Advice to clients resident outside the UK including pre-arrival planning

There is plenty of opportunity for the right associate to build a career in this fast developing practice group.

Harriet Irving, one of the senior associates in the team who practices in this area, comments: “I was drawn to Stevens & Bolton because of the high calibre of work which is on a par with London without being restricted in the scope of my practice. I was keen to advise on a wide range of matters, including tax advisory work as well as more traditional private client work.  I have been able to develop a broad practice within the team and I regularly advise on complex planning and structures for high net worth individuals and families, often with an international element. I also give onshore tax and estate planning advice for a range of clients including business owners, entrepreneurs, and local families as well as advising trustees and beneficiaries of trusts. In addition to this I run a number of the more complex probate and estate administration matters. The firm has supported me in increasing my knowledge and breadth of practice through the STEP diploma and advanced certificate in UK tax for international clients, as well as by providing opportunities to work on a wide variety of matters and through internal training. The team itself is extremely welcoming and friendly, with every member being approachable and willing to help. This culture is pervasive throughout the firm, which is great as there are lots of opportunities to work with other teams and offer a full service approach for clients.”

Qualifications and Experience

We are looking for a strong team player with good inter-personal skills, strong academics and high quality experience – typically with a major City or leading national/regional practice.  Excellent communication skills are a must.  An appetite for business development would be a definite advantage.

Candidates should have a general track record in private client work and prior exposure to the areas outlined above would be preferred.

We offer excellent supervision, coaching and training, but we expect all team members to take responsibility at an early stage and to want to be stretched and challenged.
