Why Bates Wells?

Our values are important to us, they shape our decisions and our working life.

Making a profit is core to all businesses but our goal is to combine this with a real social purpose. Since opening in 1970, we’ve focussed on positive social impact as much as we have on being a successful law firm and we were the first UK law firm with B Corp certification.

Today, our clients are diverse – from corporate household names, to public bodies, to start-ups. We’re also the firm of choice for thousands of charities and social enterprises.  We continue to lead the market we helped to shape.

As a purpose and values driven firm we show commitment to our clients, our people, the environment and society.  We see it as our purpose to create a positive impact. The impact we have on our people, our communities and our planet does more than inform our work - it gets us up in the morning.

Bates Wells challenges what is possible in legal expertise delivery.

The Role

The successful candidate will need to establish themselves quickly in a busy team and look to contribute to a supportive environment across a varied caseload divided approximately equally between advisory and contentious work.

The role requires confidence in seeking and conferring with other team members on the correct advice for our client issues, including regulatory matters that involve more than one regulatory regime and inter-disciplinary cases. The successful candidate will have a curious and tenacious personality coupled with strong attention to detail and able to attend and assimilate information from various sources. Our clients include public and private sector bodies, charities, social enterprises and individuals in a variety of sectors including local government, charities, education and health and social care.

We encourage our junior lawyers to pursue their personal interests through their practice; take on early responsibility, including a high degree of client contact; contribute to business development; and work cross-departmentally through our wide range of exceptionally strong sector groups.

We have an agreed set of values consistent with our purpose and we seek people who are attuned with our purpose and values.
