Why Bates Wells?

Making a profit is core to all businesses but our goal is to combine this with a real social purpose. Our values are pivotal to us, they shape our decisions and the way we live and work.

We focus on positive social impact as much as we focus on being a successful law firm. Our top tier legal advice is coupled with a real desire to drive change and we were the first UK law firm with B Corp certification, awarded to businesses that balance purpose and profit.

Today, our clients are diverse – from corporate household names, to public bodies, to start ups. We’re also the firm of choice for thousands of charities and social enterprises. We continue to lead the market we helped to shape.

Bates Wells challenges what is possible in legal expertise delivery.

The role

This is an excellent opportunity for a circa 4-years PQE lawyer to work with Patrick Keown to support the work we do within Banking and Finance.

Our Banking and Finance Team advise a broad spectrum of clients, lenders and borrowers, on a wide variety of financing arrangements including general corporate finance, charitable and social finance, acquisition, receivables and trade finance. We are panel lawyers for a number of lenders from clearing banks to those focused on social impact. Our borrower clients range from small and medium-sized enterprises through to multinational corporations, social housing providers, charities of all sizes and other not-for-profit entities.

Our Banking and Finance Team have extensive experience in acquisition finance, property finance, restructurings, refinancing, trade finance, asset-based lending and general finance on a bilateral, club and syndicated basis. In addition we are specialists advisers on funding to national, regional and local charities, social housing providers and developers, not-for-profit organisations, social enterprises, membership organisations, community groups, schools and colleges, churches, welfare and professional associations.

We encourage all our lawyers to pursue their personal interests through their practice, develop management skills through supervising junior fee earners, contribute to business development and work cross-departmentally through our wide range of exceptionally strong sector groups.

Lawyers are provided with career development support, for example encouragement to co-manage client relationships with partners, support the development of recently qualified lawyers and be involved in the development of the department’s strategy.

Our team structure ensures a supportive environment coupled with the opportunity to work collaboratively with colleagues across the department and with other teams in the firm.

The firm has a competency framework in place which sets out the competencies we expect from our people at this stage.
