Purpose of the role

Under the direction of the Head of Business Development and Marketing, the purpose of this role is to raise our profile, increase market share, competitiveness and profitability, by providing strategic and practical business development support to partners and fee earners, ensuring they successfully deliver on their business plans (aligned to the firm's overall business strategy).  This will mean working collaboratively with all parts of the firm to identify mutually beneficial opportunities and coordinating/facilitating a full range of business development initiatives.

This new role is part of our global strategy aimed at building greater connectivity between our lawyers and our locations, and utilising the benefit of more immediate access to contacts and networking opportunities in London.

Main responsibilities

  • Working with the partners to coordinate and implement a business development strategy (across agreed global practice areas), supported by a rolling action plan with specific outcomes/deliverables to enhance business performance and growth. Practically, this will include recommending and arranging client and intermediary meetings; providing up to date information about the contact and recent market activity; capturing actions and information gained and ensuring follow up.
  • Identifying key targets and stakeholders to create an organised and consistent engagement/contact programme and designing tracking mechanisms to increase the profile of the practice areas. This will include developing both existing and new relationships.
  • Assessing and arranging attendance at targeted events and conferences to acquire new contacts and create opportunities to generate new business.
  • Developing an appropriate range of planning, analysis and feedback/reporting tools and metrics to facilitate accurate assessment, tracking and measurement of business development activities.
  • Reviewing all promotional (and internal) material to ensure that it supports and aligns with the key messages required and is consistent with the firm's overall business development strategy.
  • Assisting with entries to awards, directories, marketing and online activities to aid business development by raising profile and increasing exposure.
  • Undertaking market research, including market knowledge, competitor deals and who is instructing who (supported by the knowledge management team). This includes keeping abreast of client issues to enable pro-active identification of business opportunities.
  • Playing a key role in the successful adoption of a new CRM system, being part of the implementation team and helping to drive new behaviours across the firm.
  • Assisting with and managing responses to invitations to tender or bid for current or new work opportunities, collating and maintaining suitable materials and advising on the content and format of documentation.
  • Identifying essential training requirements to strengthen our lawyers' business development skills.

Qualifications

Educated to degree level, with a relevant professional qualification - likely to be in marketing, business or law.

Knowledge/skills/experience

  • At least five years' business development experience in business to business services, preferably with a minimum of three years in a legal or fiduciary environment.
  • Proven experience working with partners/senior management in the development of client relationships.
  • Ideally a broad understanding of the legal market/products/services.
  • Excellent research, analysis and report writing skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Strong digital marketing/social media experience.
  • Highly computer literate (with knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Effective time management and organisational skills.
  • Experience of working with Client Relationship Management systems.
  • Excellent project management skills.
