The department

Birketts is recruiting for a driven and forward-thinking Legal Director or Partner to come and be part of our top ranked and growing Social Housing team. The role is offered on a full-time basis but part time will be considered and can be based from any of our offices which include Cambridge, Chelmsford, Ipswich, London or Norwich.

Ranked 1 tier in Chambers and Legal 500, you will join a highly successful, leading Social Housing team which sits within the Firm’s Property Department and acts for a broad range of leading national and regional Registered Providers, local authorities, private house-builders and funders on a wide range of issues affecting the sector. We are a multi-disciplinary team, used to working together on major projects. The breadth of our expertise means that we provide our clients with a fully comprehensive service which covers all the legal needs of RPs and other bodies within the social housing sector.

Our Social Housing team has experienced significant growth in recent years and with high profile tender wins that growth is set to continue. We are now looking to expand further by recruiting a senior Development lawyer at either Legal Director or Partner level to play a leading role in our Social Housing team, including helping to plan and lead our further expansion plans, and to complement our wider market leading Property team.

Purpose of job
  • Drafting and negotiating Section 106 Agreements for Registered Providers
  • Drafting and negotiating Nomination Agreements on behalf of Registered Providers
  • Drafting and negotiating Infrastructure Agreements and Wayleave Agreements for Registered Providers
  • Drafting and negotiating Management Agreements and Service Level Agreements on behalf on Registered Providers
  • Acquisitions of housing development sites for RPs
  • Acquisitions of "s.106 sites” for RPs from private housebuilders
The candidate

We are see seeking a Legal Director / Partner of 7 years + PQE who ideally has gained experience within a regional, national or City firm with a well-developed knowledge in all areas of commercial property and a particular bias towards the social housing sector.

You will have management experience to supervise a team, with the technical ability to run and manage your own full caseload of files from initial instruction through to post completion. You will be advising on drafting and negotiating management agreements and service level agreements, acquisitions and funding.

You will be active in marketing and business development in order to expand this area of work and gain new clients, building good relationships with referrers in the local area.
The understanding to have a flexible approach to work to ensure client deadlines are always met and clients are communicated with on a consistent and regular basis.
