Criminal Legal Billing Clerk

Job Purpose

To provide a complete service to fee earners in the CLS team by ensuring that accounting and administration processes are carried out promptly and effectively, dealing with queries and reconciliations, providing assistance and support to fee earners to enable them to manage their files. You will be responsible for dealing with escalated queries and issues that arise from senior stakeholders in the Criminal billing team

Key Responsibilities
  • Liaising with team secretaries and fee earners to ensure accurate and timely submission of files in order that Police Station, Magistrates Court, Crown Court and any other criminal Legal Aid bills can be prepared and processed. This includes allocating costs between fee earners.
  • Processing of the weekly LAA Payment in relation to Crown Court
  • Closing of files, filing and general housekeeping of Criminal files including checking and writing off balances on files that are ready for closure.
  • Ensuring the LAA submission and upload is carried out each month in a timely manner. Including data entry onto the LAA online system for uploading information
  • Monitoring internal billing target to ensure where possible that the target is met.
  • Preparing payment of LAA bills from monies received.
  • Liaising with Barristers Chambers and Counsel with regards to fee notes and payment of said.
  • Dealing with telephone and queries that arise on a daily basis and any other duties that arise within the Accounts section.
  • Adhering to the Solicitors Accounts rules and practices.
  • Any other reasonable duties for the smooth running of the Accounts function.

Person Specification

Education

  • Passes at “C” grade or higher in GCSE (or equivalent) core subjects, to include Maths and English Language
  • Consideration will also be given to candidates with relevant professional qualifications / memberships
