The department

The Billing Team, led by the Finance Operations Manager, works closely with the fee-earning departments to ensure client bills are issued in a timely manner, that any work in progress (WIP) is followed up on and that billing is maximised on a monthly basis.  In addition, the team liaises closely with the Credit Control and Cashier teams, to ensure open lines of communication and work flows across the teams, as appropriate.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Finance Operations Manager, this role will be a 9 month FTC and will be responsible for supporting the EIR division and some fee earners from CMI division although this may change from time to time.

Organising and attending monthly WIP/billing meetings with partners and associates in the designated divisions, the WCC will be responsible for all activities in the billing life-cycle, including:

  • assisting with raising pro-forma, engrossing and all other billing related processing;

  • liaising with Business Divisional Manager, Partners and Associates to maximise billing for each division;

  • setting up monthly billing routines, as required;

  • dealing with ledger queries and credit note requests, as appropriate;

  • following up on billing promises;

  • arranging for pro-formas to be raised and/or diarised;

  • chasing outstanding pro-formas on a weekly basis;

  • processing all WIP write-offs and transfers;

  • occasional releasing of Barclays.net payments.

Additional information

The WIP Controller must be able to demonstrate:

  • excellent organisational skills, both to ensure work is delivered in a timely manner and deadlines are met;

  • strong communication skills, with an ability to communicate at all levels from senior partners to junior staff;

  • readiness to challenge fee earners if billing is not happening in a timely manner;

  • an ability to manage own workload, independently, whilst working as part of an effective team; and

  • Willingness to work additional hours as required, e.g. to meet month end close down deadlines.

Billing experience within a law firm and experience of using Elite preferred.
