The department

The Employment, Immigration and Reward division of Lewis Silkin is a very busy team consisting of 19 partners and around 60 other specialist lawyers.  The majority of our lawyers are based in our London office at 5 Chancery Lane; however, we also have a Cardiff office where 10 of the Department’s lawyers are based and offices in Oxford and Hong Kong. The team’s work is a mix of contentious and non-contentious matters for clients ranging from large multinationals to individuals.  The lawyers also undertake a significant amount of business development work including giving seminars and producing Lewis Silkin branded publications. There is a significant international element to the department’s work due to its membership of the Ius Laboris international alliance of employment lawyers.

Incentives and Immigration work is handled by specialists within the department and this will therefore not form part of the role.

The Paralegal will be providing both fee-earning and administrative support to the team with a view to ensuring that individual tasks are completed cost-effectively and at the appropriate level.

Responsibilities

The jobholder will be working alongside one more Paralegal in the Cardiff office to provide support to the team as well as to home-working lawyers as part of the Rockhopper service. (http://www.rockhopperhr.com/). Fee-earning activities may include involvement in Court and tribunal cases, for example the preparation of trial bundles, disclosure, liaising with witnesses, drafting witness statements, briefing counsel and attendance at Courts and tribunals.

Other key elements of the role are:

  • legal research;

  • assisting in the various marketing initiatives within the department including, in particular, researching and assisting lawyers in preparing for conferences and other speaking engagements;

  • providing assistance with billing, narratives and administration;

  • contributing copy to our websites and Cardiff office social networks; and

  • working on international projects.

A typical day might involve conducting research on complex employment law issues for the solicitors and partners in the department, drafting agreements, liaising with counsel and ACAS officers as well as more hands on work such as preparing document bundles for tribunal hearings; reviewing and updating staff handbooks and researching and drafting conference papers.
