The department

The Employment, Immigration and Reward Division of Lewis Silkin consists of 23 partners and around 100 other specialist lawyers.

The Immigration team is a specialist group within the Division which has 15 fee earners.  The team acts for clients from a variety of industry sectors including advertising, IT, the fashion industry, international law firms, finance and professional football and rugby clubs.

The team advises on the process of moving staff into the UK and internationally.   We also act for individuals applying for leave to remain in the UK, for British Citizenship, and HNW applying under Tier 1.

Responsibilities

1.         Client training and external conferences

  • Proactively monitor trends in immigration to ensure marketing materials, articles and client training are at the leading edge in terms of content and delivery.

  • Co-ordinating participation by Immigration Team members in external conferences and seminars.

  • Developing a bank of ‘precedent’ conference/seminar materials (handouts/slides etc) and efficient systems for storing documentation.

  • Assisting Immigration Team members in preparing for internal and external seminar/conference engagements.

2.         Knowledge management

  • Maintaining and developing the Immigration Team’s library of precedents.

  • Organising and maintaining the Immigration Team’s electronic database of useful know-how documents and its departmental information.

  • Producing and maintaining a range of checklists, practice notes etc for use within the Immigration Team.

  • Prepare updates in line with legal developments to inform colleagues and help with the advice they give to clients.Ensuring colleagues have the key takeaways from relevant cases.

  • Enhancing and developing new mechanisms for capturing, sharing and communicating know-how.

3.         Internal training

  • Managing the Immigration Team’s internal training at the weekly team meeting.

  • Assisting Immigration Team members in preparing for internal training events.

4.         Other

  • Assisting Immigration Team members with occasional research projects (usually chargeable).

  • Occasionally collating information packs on particular topics for clients.

  • Assisting with writing & production of Immigration Team publications (in briefs, e-news etc).

  • Being a knowledge leader and pro-actively writing articles on new topics and areas of interest.

Additional information

Candidate profile

The successful candidate is likely to be an associate (approx. 3+ years pqe) looking to move to a PDL role or a current PDL with Immigration experience.  Candidates must have legal qualifications and experience in Immigration and excellent academics. A flair for drafting/journalism will be an advantage.  Candidates will also have IT, numeracy, practical and strong analytical skills, a clear communication style (both spoken and written), and above all, must be a team player with a passion to work with a fast-paced professional and friendly team. Good practical knowledge of IT and Know How systems would be helpful with experience of using the internet and on-line information systems.
