The firm

Lewis Silkin is a UK top-100 commercial law firm with offices in London, Oxford, Cardiff, Dublin and Hong Kong. The firm is recognised by clients and industries alike as being distinct: for its deep understanding, insight and advice to creative, innovative and brand-focused businesses; for its market-leading international practice in employment, immigration and reward; and for delivering pragmatic, commercial advice in a refreshingly human way.

With 59 partners and more than 340 staff, the firm is structured around two key divisions; the Employment, Immigration and Reward (EIR) and the Creators, Makers and Innovators (CMI).

The department

The employment team of Lewis Silkin is one of the leading employment law practices both domestically and internationally. Our team is amongst the largest in the UK with 23 employment / immigration partners and around 100 other specialist lawyers.

The team’s work comprises a mix of contentious and non-contentious matters for a diverse range of clients.  Our lawyers undertake a significant amount of business development, including giving seminars, producing Lewis Silkin branded publications and driving client relationships.  International advice is central to our practice and we are members of the Ius Laboris international alliance of employment lawyers.  Incentives and Immigration work is handled by specialists within the division and this will therefore not form part of the role.

The Paralegal will be providing both fee-earning and administrative support to the team with a view to ensuring that individual tasks are completed cost-effectively and at the appropriate level.

Responsibilities

The jobholder will provide support to the team in both a fee-earning and marketing capacity.  Fee-earning activities may include involvement in court and tribunal cases, for example the preparation of trial bundles, disclosure, liaising with witnesses, drafting witness statements, briefing counsel and attendance at courts and tribunals.

Other key elements of the role are:

  • legal research.

  • assisting in the various marketing initiatives within the department including, in particular, researching and assisting lawyers in preparing for conferences and other speaking engagements.

  • providing assistance with billing, narratives and administration.

  • contributing copy to our websites.

  • work on international projects.

  • willingness to undertake client secondment opportunities when needed.

A typical day might involve conducting research on complex employment law issues for the solicitors and partners in the department, drafting agreements, liaising with counsel and ACAS officers as well as more hands on work such as preparing document bundles for tribunal hearings; reviewing and updating staff handbooks and researching and drafting conference papers.
