The department

The EIR Division is one of the leading employment law practices in the UK, with 24 employment and immigration Partners and around 100 other specialist lawyers.

The team’s work comprises a mix of contentious and non-contentious matters for a diverse range of clients. Our lawyers undertake a significant amount of business development, including giving seminars, producing Lewis Silkin branded publications and driving client relationships.  International advice is central to our practice and we are members of the Ius Laboris international alliance of employment lawyers

The Japan Business Group (JBG)

The JBG sits within the EIR Division and consists of a Consultant Partner and a Senior Associate. Their focus is to advise Japanese clients on English law, working together with other associates in all practice areas.

Responsibilities

The jobholder will provide legal and administrative support to the JBG team in both a fee-earning and marketing capacity, working in both English and Japanese.  The main focus of the role will be drafting advice emails for clients, preparing trial bundles for tribunal claims, co-ordinating advice for clients and drafting newsletters for marketing purposes. 

Other key elements of the role (in both English and Japanese) may include:

  • conducting legal research;

  • updating and reviewing documents; policies and handbooks;

  • drafting agreements and liaising with counsel and ACAS;

  • co-ordinating matters for relevant parties when a matter handler is absent;

  • translating documents and correspondences from Japanese to English and vice versa;

  • assisting in the various marketing initiatives within the Division including, in particular, researching and assisting lawyers in preparing for conferences and other speaking engagements (especially seminars focused on Japanese audiences);

  • contributing copy to our websites;

  • working on international projects

Additional information

Candidate profile

Candidates will have strong academics along with legal qualifications, good Japanese and English language skills (written and spoken) and basic knowledge of English law. Candidates will also have IT, numeracy, practical and analytical skills, a clear communication style (both spoken and written), and above all, must be a team player with a passion to work with a fast-paced professional and friendly team.
