The department

The Learning and Development (L&D) Manager role sits within the central Human Resources team, which consists of the Chief People Officer, an HR Manager, a Senior HR Officer, 4 HR Officers, a Senior HR Assistant, an HR Assistant and an CSR & Sustainability Executive. In addition there are also three additional HR Managers who sit within the business; one within the Creators, Makers and Innovators (CMI) division and two within Employment, Immigration and Reward (EIR).  

Objectives of the Learning and Development Manager role:

  1. To lead on L and D strategy for the firm, increasing overall firm performance by ensuring all staff have the right mix of skills to drive our business forward
  2. To improve the engagement, motivation and fulfilment of partners and staff of Lewis Silkin by supporting them to achieve their potential;
  3. To motivate our people to take collective responsibility for their personal development and foster a coaching culture;
  4. To ensure that a structured, modular learning and development (L & D) programme is delivered across three business areas: CMI Faculty, EIR faculty and LS Business School
Responsibilities

L & D Steering Group

  • With the Chief People Officer (CPO) setting the direction of the Firm’s L & D activity and having direct responsibility for the successful delivery of Lewis Silkin University (LSU),  and in particular the Lewis Silkin Business School
  • With the CPO, or individually, present to management teams or divisions on current initiatives or best practice.
  • Acting as secretary of the L & D steering group, setting the agenda and ensuring action points are followed up.
  • Liaising with the Practice Development Lawyer (PDL) community to ensure the faculties of CMI and EIR are supported.
  • Monitoring attendance at training and alerting Career Development Partners (CDPs) when attendance is poor and ensuring systems are in place to record training attendance on Cascade (HR System).
  • Help to facilitate team and divisional learning sessions/lunches.

Other responsibilities

  • Monitor existing training programmes, assess results and implement enhancements where needed.
  • Deliver various professional skills training courses to support staff, trainees and associates.
  • Conduct training needs analysis and, where appropriate, develop or co-develop relevant new training courses.
  • To add to, refresh and update learning as necessary to ensure continuous improvement and to reflect changing priorities and in response to feedback.
  • Liaise with HR and line/business managers, advising on L&D interventions and bespoke learning needs for specific groups of employees to address individual/group performance or career development needs.
  • Maintain and, where necessary, develop training materials and associated documentation working with internal experts to develop content and/or run sessions as required
  • Develop appropriate processes for obtaining thorough and timely feedback, for example by:
  • Encouraging and reminding supervisors/CDPs to provide continuous feedback on performance using appropriate online tools;
  • Manage and help deliver the Trainee, Legal Apprentices and NQ Induction Programme.
  • Ensure that trainees and apprentices meet SRA requirements.
  • Maintain CPD records and ensure CPD requirements are met by all associates and partners.
  • Maintain key documents, frameworks, materials and intranet sites as required. 
  • Oversee the QLTS process as required.
  • Where required, source and advise others on external training providers to meet identified needs, time scales and budgets.
  • Monitor external training provision and ensure that a quality product is delivered to specification, give feedback and maintain relationships.
  • Maintain visibility throughout the firm to promote the value of learning & development and develop strong working relationships across all departments.
  • Keep up to date with relevant L&D trends and initiatives in the wider HR and legal communities.
  • Manage the annual budget for areas of responsibility.
  • Chair Inn Group meetings and maintain wide external network to ensure access to the latest L & D ideas.
Additional information

Person Specification

Professional services experience essential.  The successful candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent by experience.  They will be confident in the delivery of internal training with a good understanding of all aspects of L & D scoping and delivery and ideally possess a relevant HR or L&D qualification.

  • Psychometric qualifications. Discovery Insights and EQI 2.0 qualifications preferred but training will be provided.
