The department

The Cashier’s team led by the Head Legal Cashier works closely with the fee-earning departments to ensure that all client and matter transactions are completed in a timely and efficient manner. It is essential that the postholder has an excellent eye for detail. Training across the different roles within Cashiers will be given so it is an ideal role for someone who wants to learn all aspects of Cashiering. The team liaises with the Billing, Credit Control and the Finance Management teams so it is crucial to ensure open lines of communications and workflows across the teams as appropriate.

Responsibilities

Further to applicable training, key responsiblities will include, but are not limited to: 

  • Copying the client statement to the Excel Client cashbook and allocating receipted funds ensuring the correct ‘paperwork’ is received in accordance with the SRA rules and the firm’s policy
  • CHAPS, BACS and any other client payments. Checking funds are cleared funds in the client account and providing the ‘paperwork’ for the banking authoriser to send
  • If funds are sent to client account for payment of our invoices, arranging a transfer posting and bank entry daily
  • Transferring funds from client to client account in accordance with SRA rules
  • Writing back out of date client account cheques within a six-month deadline
  • Downloading payments from our Barclaycard account onto Elite daily
  • Closures and checking if interest due to client before closure
  • Bank reconciliation
  • Credit card receipts
  • Bill payment reversals

Key requirements

  • Preferably a knowledge and experience of windows-based packages such as Microsoft Outlook and Word
  • Proficient using Excel
  • Excellent numeracy skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Experience in a Cashier’s, Finance or Legal environment desirable but not essential
  • Knowledge of Elite 3E desirable but not essential
