The firm

Lewis Silkin works with leading businesses to protect and enhance their most important assets - their ideas, their people, their brand and their future. We call it: Ideas. People. Possibilities.

With offices in London, Oxford, Cardiff, Belfast, Dublin and Hong Kong, we are recognised by clients and industry alike as being distinct for our unique culture, market-leading practice areas, sector focused approach and for providing solutions to complex, multijurisdictional business challenges, with a pragmatic and human touch. We have two things at our core: people — both ours and our clients’— and a focus on creative, tech and innovative businesses.

Our culture is encapsulated by an ethos of bravery and kindness, guided by our values of Integrity, Clarity, Unity and Excellence (our ‘I-CUE’). We aim to provide a supportive environment for our people, clients and wider community and embrace diversity & inclusion, ensuring people are able to bring their full selves to work.

The department

Lewis Silkin’s Real Estate team is a busy, successful and well regarded real estate group. Split across our London and Cardiff offices, the team consists of eight Partners, a Consultant Partner, a Head of Housing Litigation, five Managing Associates,  two Senior Associates, two Associates, a Managing Practice Development Lawyer, a Practice Development Lawyer, two Paralegals, five Secretaries and a Departmental Assistant. The team won The Lawyer’s Real Estate Team of the Year in 2020.

The Real Estate team includes specialist construction lawyers who work with clients to provide pragmatic advice from advising on the procurement strategy and drafting and negotiating contracts with appropriate risk allocation, to being on call to provide clear advice on issues during and after construction.  Our advice helps clients avoid problems but if they do arise, we will seek to minimize the impact and help clients resolve them, if necessary by bringing or defending claims.

We have a track record of assisting clients to a successful conclusion on regeneration schemes and mixed use developments, new build and refurbishment projects, fitting out of new premises, long term repairs and maintenance contracts and complex engineering projects.

The team’s client base is predominantly purchaser-led across a wide range of sectors, including hotel owners and developers, professional consultants, film studios, marketing and advertising agencies and local authorities.

Our work includes:

  • contracts (whether industry standard such as JCT, NEC, TPC, FIDIC, etc or bespoke forms): procurement strategies, drafting and negotiation, key risk reviews and contract audits
  • construction contract disputes: adjudication, arbitration, mediation and resolution through the courts
Responsibilities

The role is for a paralegal to provide support to the construction team.  The role would suit an experienced paralegal with strong analytical abilities and the confidence to shoulder responsibility for their own matters and deal directly with clients and lawyers.

The candidate would be expected to assist the team with a range of matters at one time, including both non-contentious and contentious (mainly adjudication) matters.   The candidate would be able to work remotely and in the office – this may evolve as pandemic-related restrictions ease.  Support and relevant training will be provided.

Further responsibilities will include (but are not limited to) assisting with the following duties:

  • Legal research.
  • Project management of client projects.
  • Providing support in relation to the provision of training for fee-earners.
  • Business development activities.
