The team:

Marrons Planning are a nationally growing team of town planning consultants providing high quality advice and guidance on a wide range of planning and development issues.

We advise on planning matters of all types and scales from leading and co-ordinating large and complex development proposals, to dealing with small scale and householder developments.  We act on behalf of major house builders and developers, manufacturers and investment companies, blue chip companies and land promoters, in addition to land and property owners, retailers, local authorities and private individuals across the United Kingdom.  

We co-ordinate, project manage and audit planning applications, including EIA development, urban regeneration schemes, urban extensions, site allocation and promotions and strategic planning, housing land supply advice and commercial/retail planning expertise.  We provide expert advice and guidance to our clients throughout all stages of the planning process and have considerable experience and knowledge of negotiating with local planning authorities, resolving issues, and delivering planning permissions.

Marrons Planning is part of law firm Shakespeare Martineau. We are part of a large multi-disciplinary team which comprises lawyers, surveyors and chartered town planners.  As part of Shakespeare Martineau, you will also have access to high quality training and support for the key business skills you need to progress your career in planning consultancy. We support and fund membership of the RTPI for our team.

This role is currently home-based.  Going forward, it will be predominantly home based with travel once or twice a week, as required, to any of our office hub locations.

The role:

Our thriving team is expanding and we are on the lookout for an experienced strategic Planning Associate or Director with experience in socio-economic analysis.  This includes demographic research and modelling, Objective Assessment of Housing Need, Housing, commercial & sports research and market intelligence. 

You will also be working on:

  • employment land supply and need assessments,
  • social infrastructure assessments,
  • sconomic and socio-economic impact assessment/EIA socio-economic chapters,
  • health impact assessments,
  • retail impact assessments,
  • GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping of social,
  • economic and market data,
  • economic benefits statements,
  • social and wellbeing benefits statements.

You’ll predominantly be coordinating project teams and collaborating with our talented people on work across the UK, including large and small scale projects, appeals and planning applications.  Key sectors are residential, commercial, retail and regeneration.

We can offer you the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, including delivering major mixed-use urban extensions across the UK.  You will be working with national house builders, land promoters, and landowners.  From securing planning permissions and land allocations, to negotiating S106 Agreements and conditions, you will be given the opportunity to be a key part of our growing business.

Ideally, you will have good existing connections within the development sector and be highly personable.  The ability to work efficiently and effectively with more junior colleagues on projects is also helpful. 

Key duties will include:

  • co-ordinating and preparing impact assessments (environmental, health, socio-economic, sustainability) and associated processes for a range of developments
  • reviewing technical reports and work with technical consultants to progress them to the necessary standard for senior sign-off
  • co-ordinating project teams to complete their tasks in delivering projects to time and budget
  • conducting research and site appraisals on projects for our client base
  • assisting with the preparation of planning promotion documents and with the submission and negotiation of planning applications
  • assisting with policy representations
  • providing planning appeal assistance, if required
  • actively seeking opportunities for business development in the team, as well as internally and externally growing your own network

Skills and experience you will have:

  • at least 3 years’ experience in a similar role working in local government or planning / consultancy
  • a relevant Planning qualification / MSc in Town Planning
  • a sound and demonstrable knowledge of the planning system, EIA, SA/ plan promotion
  • a broad understanding of environmental, social, economic and sustainability issues
  • a track record in EIA and housing need and socio-economic assessment
  • proficiency in Microsoft packages
  • own car and full UK driving license
  • a membership of RTPI or RICS or working towards membership
  • demonstrable experience in business development and attracting new clients
