The opportunity

The role:

You will provide business-critical support to our Head of Risk and supporting team on a range of matters dealing with regulatory and policy compliance on a day-to-day basis.

You will have a proactive approach to problem solving, and a specific interest in client service delivery and the development of best practice initiatives in legal services.

The core duties will involve assisting in the active management and progression of current complaints and potential claims of negligence within the firm. The successful candidate will be responsible for retrieving and delivering management information to the Head of Risk and assisting with the professional indemnity insurance renewal. 

Additional duties will include supporting the Risk Team in the management of general risk, compliance and regulatory enquiries, auditing against key certifications (currently ISO 9001 – Quality Standard and ISO 27001 – Information Security Standard), and assistance in the effective delivery of key risk projects as required.

The team are based in our Birmingham and Leicester offices. This role will be based in the Leicester office and occasional travel to other offices may be required.

Your key duties will include:

  • assisting with the analysis of claims and complaints
  • assisting with the professional indemnity insurance renewal
  • retrieving and delivering management information
  • conducting research on legal matters
  • opening new matters including, the arrangement of risk profiles of new and existing clients as well as third parties
  • conducting due diligence searches
  • conducting preliminary research on professional rules and regulations
  • updating registers
  • ensuring all risks are reported
  • identifying conflicts and ensuring internal procedures are strictly followed
  • conducting document reviews in relation to investigations (or otherwise)
  • supporting the firm on issues with engagement letters, Outside Counsel Guidelines and our Terms of Business
  • monitoring all queries received via email (or otherwise) and responding to such queries
  • the proactive escalation of issues of concern to the Head of Risk
  • assisting in other compliance projects and duties, as required

Your additional duties will include:

  • reporting to the team on regulatory and legislative changes (identified through monitoring of a variety of sources) which could impact the relevant legal groups / the wider profession
  • internal auditing of files and work areas to ensure compliance with ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 standards
  • assistance in risk and best practice improvement projects

Skills and experience you will have:

  • previous litigation paralegal experience, ideally with the LPC qualification or equivalent
  • experience of working in a client service environment, or within a law firm
  • strong IT skills, particularly Excel
  • excellent communication skills – written, verbal and report writing
  • examples of instances of actively taking ownership and responsibility

  • strong interpersonal skills and the confidence to handle sometimes challenging telephone calls
  • excellent attention to detail and accuracy
