The Department

Our specialist Healthcare team covers all aspects of healthcare and related areas of law and practice, including child law, clinical negligence, clinical governance, consent to treatment, healthcare advisory and mental health. We provide a supportive, proactive service based on a deep understanding of NHS procedures and the social/political background of public healthcare. Our expert team includes doctors and nurses among other health professionals, all with specialist medical knowledge in key areas. 

The role

PLEASE NOTE: This role is to be based on secondment at the Headquarters of a Trust in the Greater Manchester region or at Weightmans’ Manchester or Liverpool office.  Working within the in-house legal team which has responsibility for handling inquests, clinical negligence claims, EL/PL claims and DPA requests on behalf of the Trust.           

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Work from Trust Headquarters or from Weightmans’ Manchester or Liverpool office as required
  • Part of a team of 4 including 2 other paralegals/legal assistants, managed by a solicitor from Weightmans also on secondment
  • Assist in the running of inquests, clinical negligence claims and EL/PL claims
  • Conduct relevant investigations in order to repudiate and/or conclude the claim
  • Liaise with various stakeholders internally and externally, including Execs and Senior Managers, the Coroner, claimants and their solicitors, colleagues, the Trust and NHSR
  • Complete MI procedures as and when required
  • Adhere to Weightmans and client protocols
  • Achieve set financial and chargeable targets
  • Ensure relevant deadlines, quality measures and KIPS are adhered to
  • Comply with relevant policies and procedures
  • Work in accordance with client and Weightmans’ values

The person specification
  • Would suit a paralegal with 1 year + experience in a law firm handling PI claims
  • Experience of running a caseload would be preferred
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritise
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Ability to work to strict deadlines and targets
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative
  • Flexible approach
