The Department

Our Casualty team provides a full, expert service in defending public and employers' liability claims, particularly workplace, public sector and claims against the emergency services. Weightmans' team is second-to-none in providing defendant litigation services in these specialist areas. We operate on a national basis with dedicated workplace, public and police teams.

The role
  • Work within the dedicated utilities team
  • Handle a varied caseload for a large national utility company. This will involve handling litigated and pre-lit injury claims, flood damage property, damage and business interruption claims, contribution claims and recoveries.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the Water Industry Act and the New Roads and Street works Act and apply those to claims as part of the work.
  • Assist with and prepare/present training to meet client needs
  • Support the partners with the client account and attend relevant meetings including advisory work for the client
  • Supervise others with their caseloads and assist other types of commercial or injury litigation work
  • Achieve set hours and billing targets
  • Meet deadlines, and comply with procedural requirements from clients and the firm
  • Comply with relevant policies and procedures
  • Work in accordance with Weightmans’ values

The person specification
  • Previous experience of dealing with claims in negligence and breach of statutory duty either for or against a utility company/statutory undertaker is preferable but not essential
  • Previous experience of flood damage and business interruption claims would also be an advantage, although training will be provided
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and concentration

  • Ability to work to deadlines and targets
