The Department

Our specialist Healthcare team covers all aspects of healthcare and related areas of law and practice, including child law, clinical negligence, clinical governance, consent to treatment, healthcare advisory and mental health. We provide a supportive, proactive service based on a deep understanding of NHS procedures and the social/political background of public healthcare. Our expert team includes doctors and nurses among other health professionals, all with specialist medical knowledge in key areas.

The role

PLEASE NOTE: This role is to be based on secondment at Tameside Hospital. 

Trust Solicitor with responsibility for managing the legal services team dealing with inquests and claims.     

Main duties and responsibilities

  • To supervise a solicitor and three paralegals dealing with inquests and EL/PL and clinical negligence claims on behalf of the Trust.
  • To deal with a caseload of inquest cases; to carry out investigations and liaise with clinicians regarding the inquests.
  • Reporting to the Trust’s Executive team.
  • Delivering training to the clinicians on site.
  • To deal with ad hoc queries from the Trust and clinicians, including about consent, DOLS, safeguarding and DPA/GDPR.
  • Complete client MI procedures/databases
  • Achieve set financial and chargeable hours targets
  • Ensure relevant deadlines, quality measures and KIPS are adhered to
  • Comply with relevant policies and procedures
  • Work in accordance with Weightmans’ values

The person specification
  • Inquest experience
  • Defendant PI litigation experience, ideally clinical negligence, would be an advantage
  • Proven technical ability
  • Ability to work to strict deadlines and timescales
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative
