The Department

The Regulatory Department is a market leading national team offering a diverse and broad range of expert advice to organisations and individuals facing Health & Safety, criminal and other regulatory prosecutions. 

Whilst being one of the largest Regulatory teams nationally, we have separate niche teams one of which is Motor Regulatory.  Within the last 24 months the team recruited a Partner to lead the Motor Regulatory offering, with exciting plans for growth for which this role is a key part of the future plans for the team.  

The role

Whilst we have a team of specialist criminal and regulatory lawyers within the Motor Regulatory team, as part of our growth and expansion, we are looking for a specialist in Transport Regulation, with a view to working alongside the Partner and others in the team to grow the existing client base, and look to enhance our offering to commercial fleet clients. 

This is an exciting opportunity for a transport regulatory lawyer NQ + PQE to be part of a growing team in developing our wider Motor Regulatory offering.  This is a wonderful opportunity for the successful candidate to have both a case handling role, as well as being client facing, playing a fundamental part in the team’s ambitious plans for growth. 

We can consider applications from all locations excluding London.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • To provide advice to a broad range of clients on their transport regulatory issues.
  • To work proactively with clients to ensure compliance with transport regulatory matters.
  • To represent clients and perform advocacy at inquiries, tribunals, interviews etc.
  • To ensure you maintain an up to date knowledge of environment law, updates, legislation etc.
  • Assist with business development initiatives including training and networking.
  • Produce monthly and ad-hoc client MI reports.
  • Work in accordance with client and internal SLAs.
  • Work in accordance with Weightmans’ values and procedures.

The person specification
  • Some experience as a transport regulatory lawyer
  • Some experience in public inquiries, operator licence applications and variations, traffic commissioner appeals, and DVSA investigations and prosecutions. 
  • Ability to work to deadlines and targets.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
