The Role

The Infrastructure Systems Manager will take the lead technical role for network and server infrastructure and third line technical support of business applications across the business. In the absence of the Head of IT will stand in and manage the IT department along with the Support Manager and Development Manager.

The role will be responsible for investigating and analysing system requirements and develop specifications and then make value judgement around technical specification and costs from suppliers. Ensuring the current infrastructure is maintained and provides the business with a high level of system performance and availability. Manage the infrastructure team to achieve the stated goals.

Duties will include
  • Strategy – create and maintain IT server and network strategy in line with the business needs and keeping in best practice for the legal sector.
  • Ensure server and network technology is maintained and in line with agreed strategy and policy. This should be in line with comply with legislation and standards relevant to the organization.
  • Development – to manage the further development and implementation of large scale projects such as infrastructure refresh, database (SQL) upgrade, new printer system etc.
  • Manage the day to day operations of IT systems, ensuring that planning, end-user impact, change management, training, quality management are properly addressed and monitored to ensure deadlines, budgets and service levels are met and results delivered.
  • Supply management – manage the relationships with (and between) external agencies and suppliers, ensuring contracts and services supplied as agreed on-time, on-budget and to agreed specification. Ensuring cost effective and appropriate procurement and contractual arrangements.
  • Management – manage on a day-to-day basis any staff involved in the infrastructure and networks, ensuring monthly 1-2-1 are carried out, annual appraisals are completed to continually improve performance.
  • Business continuity – ensure backups are taken as per agreed schedules and contribute to DR plans for the business.
  • Analyze log files and investigate and correct or record errors that are discovered.
  • Ensure backup processes function correctly and backup all data as per the policies
  • Become an expert in the Legal specific software we utilise as a business.
  • Configure, manage and maintain network and router devices such as layer 2 and 3 switches and network firewalls.
  • Develop and maintain scripts and programs that automate repetitive tasks and data transfer as and when required.
  • Clearly document features systems and processes and ensure that relevant knowledge is passed on to others in the team.
  • Ensure that helpdesk tickets that are escalated to the Infrastructure team are investigated promptly and closed at the earliest opportunity.
  • Ensure regularly scheduled technical tasks are accomplished on time.
  • Monitor industry trends, technologies, and standards.
  • Research, recommend, and apply new technologies as they emerge.
  • Provide out of hours support as and when is required by the business in line with out of hours support policy.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Develop good working relationships with the members of the IT team and the wider business.
Skills Required

Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate:

A high level working knowledge of most the following:

  • Citrix thin client technology
  • Internet protocols, VPN and Firewalls.
  • VMware, Vmotion or similar virtualization technology.
  • Veeam backup software or similar
  • Network storage
  • Support of network print systems and servers.
  • Network trouble shooting, monitoring, and maintenance tools and techniques.
  • Web technologies such as Microsoft IIS and TomCat.
  • Encryption and certificates.
  • Group policy, Active Directory and LDAP integration.
  • WAN’s, LAN’s, MPLS, ADSL
  • DHCP and DNS management 
  • SQL servers and SQL query language.
  • IP Telephony such as Mitel 3300 or similar
  • Office 365 services including SharePoint and Exchange.
  • Microsoft Operating software (Microsoft Server 2008, 2012, 2016 & 2019 ,Microsoft Windows 7/8/10)
  • Microsoft Office 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016 & 2019
  • Mobile device management (mdm)
  • Cisco networking switches including configuration changes
  • Understanding and adopting the Firm’s values and behaviours.
