The role

A junior regulatory lawyer to support the team’s work in advising on Data Protection, Procurement and state aid, financial services regulation and governance.

The team

The core team is made up of two partners: Toni Vitale (Head of Department) and Jon Baldwin.  4 – 6 other fee earners regular advise on GDPR and data protection related matters from the perspective of specific sectors such as Education, or issues such as Cyber Security and reputation management, and Employment.

Client base and type of work

Typical work will include preparing clients for the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) including terms and conditions and policy updates, breach handling and responding to ICO investigations, together with a variety of other regulatory matters, including procurement, state aid, consumer credit, FCA regulations, anti-money laundering, freedom of information, charity and public-sector governance and consumer law.

Client base:

  • Public-sector and regulated third-sector clients including the many local authorities and housing associations, together with major infrastructure operators such as Associated British Ports, HS2, Network Rail, Rail Safety Standards Board;
  • Businesses with complex data protection requirements, such as regulated financial service providers and professional services organisations.

Candidate specification
  • A sound understanding of data protection, regulatory, company, commercial and contract law principles with the ability to navigate a complex regulatory environment and efficiently distil and provide legal advice in a clear, effective and pragmatic manner. As an entry-level role, experience in all of our practice areas is less important than a willingness to learn and to take on new technically complex areas of work. As a department, we help clients face a constantly-changing regulatory landscape, so adaptability is key.
  • To be able to articulate complex legal requirements in a clear, confident and approachable fashion, with exemplary communication skills with clients, colleagues and support staff alike;
  • Sensible organisation skills and self-motivation to prioritise tasks in a busy practice with competing pressures on multiple transactions to ensure excellent client service.
  • A willingness to be involved in business development including participating in events, writing articles and bulletins and proactively identifying new innovative opportunities.
