The role

This role will include handling a costs claim case load and providing advice on all costs law issues to the various litigious departments across the firm to include supporting the Head of Costs to provide a full costs law service to the firm at large. The other aspect of this role will include the revenue control function which will include assisting with the firm’s own client billing and assisting the department to achieve firm wide objectives with respect to revenue control. Success in this role will include the competent handling of the costs claims and a proactive approach to assisting the department to achieve all its revenue control targets.  

Responsibilities and Duties

The following responsibilities and duties will be required.

  • Handling own case load of costs claims to include negotiation of disrepair claims to include costs claims within the Land Tribunal along with exposure to all costs claims undertaken across the firm.

  • Handling costs claims through Detailed Assessment proceedings.

  • Preparing Costs Budgets and dealing with all aspects of costs management to include Precedent R and advising the firm at large.

  • Preparing Statement of Costs for Hearings to include negotiation schedule in an attempt to settle costs claims prior to the requirement for Detailed Assessment proceedings.

  • Preparing Bills of Costs and Points of Dispute/Reply where required in order to progress costs claims and obtain settlement.

  • Assisting with advising litigious departments within the firm on costs issues where required and provision of a full costs law service.

  • Preparing monthly invoices for allocated departments within the firm to include supporting documentation for the justification of costs as charged to the firms’ clients.

  • Providing assistance with the department’s reporting function to the firm at large.

  • Providing assistance with the department’s revenue control targets and reporting to include the management of WIP and departmental billing projections.

  • Any other work required to assist the department to meet its objectives with respect to costs law, billing and revenue control functions.


Candidate specification

This role will suit a trainee costs lawyer.

  • This role will suit a candidate who has a good academic record to include English and Maths.

  • Experience of costs law is a requirement due to the responsibility of handling a costs claim case load. The candidate will have experience of working in a costs department either in house or for a costs agency. A good knowledge of the costs law principles behind the recovery of costs and settlement of costs claims is required.

  • The candidate will have strong attention to detail and application of the English language both verbally and written. They will be proactive which is an important requirement due to the busy department and the level of responsibility provided to the candidate. The ability to assess current work practices and formulate more efficient ways to complete the work is also a desired requirement.

  • A strong working understanding of excel to include basic formulaic functions is required due to the reporting functions within the department.

  • Previous experience of lawsoft in particular or legal management software systems would be required.

  • This role will be ideal for a junior Law Costs Draftsperson with suitable experience to allow for a good overall knowledge of costs law who is also willing to learn additional skills with respect to the department’s finance function to include billing and revenue control. Existing experience of client own billing and revenue control would be an advantage but training on these aspects of the role will be provided where required.
